One of the stereotypes of asians is that they are all good at math (and that they can’t drive). Why is it that whenever we go to an AYCE place like BC Sushi, they never bring us the correct order?
We’ve eaten at BC Sushi many times in the past but it’s been a while since we’ve been back. I was always impressed at how fast and furious the food used to come out. Before, they used to have some kind of portable electronic ordering system. I remember one time the food started to arrive at the table while we were still in the middle of doing our first order.
So I was a little surprised to see that they changed their ordering system… they gave us a pencil and a couple of scraps of paper. Now, I’m not talking about the pre-printed order sheets that you see in many AYCE places… these were just blank scraps of paper.
Their AYCE menu is split up into different price groups and if you want all the “premium” items, it costs about $28 (Note: I think there’s a cheaper late night menu).
The food seems to taste better than it used to so I guess they sacrificed efficiency for taste. That’s not necessarily a bad thing… as long as you get what you order. On our first order, they missed a ton of dishes that we ordered (mostly the premium items). On our second order, we tried ordering the items that were missed the first time but they seemed to bring us the wrong number of items (either too few of some items or too much of other items). I think they were probably trying to fill us up on all the cheap items first in hopes that we would get full and not order as much of the premium items.
Decent roll (prawn tempura topped with salmon sashimi) and beef tataki (nice and thinly sliced but less than we ordered).
Pan fried gyoza and spinach gomae salad.
Salmon sashimi and avocado salad (a bit too much mayo) and negitoro cone (too much rice).
Green salad and Atlantic salmon sashimi.
Dragon roll (prawn tempura topped with avocado and unagi) and prawn tempura.
Nigri sushi and oyster motoyaki (the oyster pieces were larger than at Kingsway Sushi but I still prefer the ones that come baked in the oyster shells).
BBQ beef short ribs and deep fried scallops.
Chicken wings and vegetable tempura.
BBQ salmon belly (there were supposed to be 3 pieces here) and salmon tataki.
Ika karaage (I like how they had a good mix of calamari rings and tentacle pieces) and mushroom motoyaki (basic whole white button mushrooms).
Spicy chicken wings and black cod (I think we ordered about a half a dozen pieces but we only received 3 slices). Since black cod is on the higher price menu, we had to reorder more.
Chicken ramen and fresh fruits (which is AYCE code for slices of oranges).
Scallop motoyaki (for some reason, they use the small tiny scallops in this dish instead of the larger scallops they use in the deep fried scallop dish) and agadashi tofu and spring rolls (tofu was a bit dry – it would have been better with some sauce).
“Seasonal vegetables” (which is code for gai lan – could have been worse, it could have been broccoli) and mussels (they gave us way too many mussels and they weren’t that good).
Mutton (it wasn’t bad but lacked a little flavour) and the Stanley Park roll (not really sure why they call it a Stanley Park roll – it had yam tempura in it and was topped with unagi I think).
Atlantic salmon, sockeye salmon, and surf clam sashimi (we kept trying to order the sockeye salmon sashimi but it never came until the end of the meal – and they gave us more than we ordered – maybe they were getting tired of us asking them about it) and mango pudding (note: mango pudding isn’t on the actual AYCE menu so you have to ask them for it).
Food: Pretty good for AYCE (at least most items) and good selection (as long as they remember to bring you your order)
Service: I usually put a number here, but I’m sure the waiters at BC Sushi would probably get the numbers mixed up
