La Patisserie (Richmond)
I was really looking forward to picking up some apple tarts at New Town Bakery but was dismayed to see that they were closed due to Victoria Day (darn lazy merchants!). I figure that if you have a retail shop, you should be open every day… how else can us poor hungry saps get our fix of apple tarts?!?! Oh well, it could be worse… I recall years ago when all stores used to be closed on Sundays. How did we ever get any shopping done before?
Any hoo, hunger pains still intact, I noticed that another Chinese bakery was open nearby and figured we might as well give that a shot.
The Napolean cake wasn’t really like the Napolean cakes I’ve had before… the centre was actually a sponge cake (which made it a bit dry). Usually, the thousand leafs of puff pastry are sandwiched with pastry cream.
The curry beef puff was good… but very small.
The pineapple bbq pork buns weren’t that great. Not enough filling (I think one of them only had 3 small pieces of bbq pork in it) and the pork was a bit dry. I think I’ve had better at T&T Supermarket.
On the other hand, I enjoyed the almond biscuits – they reminded me of the little cookies you sometimes get at dessert during Chinese wedding banquets.
I really liked the mint chocolate mousse cake and the strawberry mousse cake – they were really light and had a nice subtle flavour without being overwhelming.
All in all, it was kind of hit-and-miss with the different pastries.
