Mei Jan Hong Singapore Beef and Pork Jerky
I haven’t been back to Aberdeen Centre for a long time. Usually when we go, we always stop by at the little beef jerky shop located in the market space on the first floor. We were disappointed to see that all of the shops in the market were closed as they were putting in a H-Mart in it’s place.
Fortunately, we noticed that Mei Jan Hong was still in business… they had just re-opened last week in a new location next to the Tropika Restaurant on the first floor. I think it’s probably a better location since it’s more centrally located and not tucked in the corner like it used to be.
This isn’t like western-style beef jerky – it’s called bakkwa and comes in beef, pork, chicken and salmon as well as spicy, non-spicy, crispy and regular versions. Personally, I like the crispy, spicy pork jerky the best.
You can see into the back kitchen where they prepare the jerky on large round wooden drying platforms to air dry before packaging.
The owner is always friendly and remembers what we order even though we haven’t been back for a while. This is the best jerky I’ve had and is so much better than the pre-packaged stuff you get in grocery stores because it’s fresh. I know that sounds kind of silly since the original reason for making jerky was to preserve meats for long periods of time… but fresh jerky just tastes so much more awesomer.
