Five Guys Burgers & Fries (West Van)

Five Guys Burgers & Fries is one of the many new “gourmet” burger joints opening up in the Lower Mainland.  We’ve been meaning to try this place out for a while but have never really found the time to stop by.  Thankfully, with the opening of the nearby Pinkberry in The Village at Park Royal, we had a brand new excuse to try out Five Guys.

My first impressions when you walked into the restaurant were that you could tell that this was a US-based franchise.  Everything from the red and white checkerboard walls to the truly massive servings made me think of our neighbours to the South.

As this was our first time, we were a little confused by the menu and how to order.  It’s actually a lot easier than it looks… they really only have a few main options for burgers:

  • Hamburger
  • Cheeseburger
  • Bacon burger
  • Bacon Cheeseburger

All of these come with double patties so if you want something smaller, you go with the “Little” Hamburger, “Little” Cheeseburger, etc…  that only comes with one patty.

After that, you just tell them what toppings you want… and they’re all FREE!  So why make a choice?  Just choose them all!

All burgers come well done (not a problem for me… I’d rather have the meat cooked than get sick later).  They do serve other things like hot dogs but really, if you’re coming here, you’re coming for the hamburger!  The drink sizes come in Regular and Large… but also come with free refills so I’m not sure why anyone would actually order the Large size.

The fries also comes in Regular and Large and the portions are very generous.  We opted for the Regular size and wound up not finishing them.

We decided to go with the Little Cheeseburger and the Little Bacon Cheeseburger with everything on them.  The hamburger meat itself wasn’t spectacular but you can’t deny that the toppings really make this burger special.  I still can’t believe these were the “little” burgers.  Be warned however, eating these monster burgers is very messy and hazardous to your clothing.

They also have free self-serve peanuts that you can nosh on while you wait for your burger to be made but I would recommend saving your appetite for the fries and burger.

    • Our meal came to just over $20 in total for the 2 “little” burgers, fries, and a bottle of water. Not cheap like McDonalds but the portions are big. Romer’s is even more expensive but their burgers are awesome and well worth it.

  1. Nice. Sounds about right.
