Grand Dynasty Seafood Restaurant – Dim Sum Slots
We came to Grand Dynasty Seafood Restaurant on an early Sunday morning for dim sum (they open at 9:30am). Located next to the Grand Villa Casino in Burnaby, there is plenty of free parking in the nearby lot.
Unlike some dim sum joints, this restaurant looked rather refined by comparison. The small tables were actually real tables and not some makeshift mahjong table covered with plywood. The dinnerware actually matched and all of the seatcovers appeared to be clean.
Of course, being a Chinese restaurant, there were always a few oddities such as the noticeable spelling mistakes on the menu. The other strange thing was that they were playing a Kenny G Christmas album the whole time we were dining… in the middle of summer! I suppose the smooth jazz tunes are soothing but it’s always a little curious to hear “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” so early in the year.
The Prawn Dumplings were pretty agreeable and had plump shrimp pieces in it.
The Steamed Beef Rice Rolls came garnished with veggies.
The Deep Fried Squid was not really what I expected but I still enjoyed them. If you don’t mind eating tenatacles, you’ll probably like these.
Instead of coming with squash like at some other restaurants, the Steamed Spareribs in Black Bean Sauce here are served with taro chunks.
The long Green Beans were enticingly spicy and had a good crunch to them.
I was a bit disappointed with the Deep Fried Taro Dumplings as they seemed a little overcooked and I was distracted by the inclusion of pine nuts in the filling.
Usually when we order Mango Pudding, the cream or evaporated milk is served separately but at Grand Dynasty, they pour it out before they bring you the dish. This was an exceptional dessert and came in a large bowl with real mango pieces
While there were some misses, I think most of the dishes here were done well. In addition, you get a 15% discount before 11am. I wonder if they play Christmas music in December too?
