New Town Bakery & Restaurant (Chinatown)
While on a recent trip down to Phnom Penh down in Chinatown, we decided to stroll over to New Town Bakery on East Pender. The thing that struck me the most was seeing all of the closed shops along our walk. I recall coming down to Chinatown when I was a kid and seeing all of the hustle and bustle on the streets as everyone was trying to get their groceries from their favourite market. I’m not sure what the answer is to trying to revitalize the Chinatown neighbourhood but I am glad that places like New Town Bakery is still around.
We did an earlier post on the New Town Bakery in Richmond but it’s not as large or has as many bakery items as the one in Chinatown.
No trip to New Town Bakery would be complete without their signature apple tarts. Is it me or has their flaky crust become a little thicker than it used to be?
Of course they have a lot of other items like their curry beef turnover, prawn turnovers (these are awesome but you have to eat them fresh), and bbq pork buns.
Being so close to East Hastings Street, there’s always the inevitable person asking for spare change outside the bakery. I swear it’s the same guy that’s been there for years… must be a good location for him.
