The Keg Steakhouse & Bar – Burnaby
While you can get steak at most western restaurants nowadays, sometimes it pays to go to a steakhouse when you’re craving a well-made steak. The Keg is a very family-friendly steakhouse and one of it’s main drawbacks is due to it’s popularity… It can get quite loud during peak times with all the families, dinner parties, and dining going on. If you’re looking for a quiet place to enjoy your steak, this is not the place for you.
Dinner starts off with complimentary freshly baked sourdough bread with whipped butter. I know it’s just filler but it’s very yummy filler… nothing tastes better than fresh, hot sourdough bread with butter.
The Keg has a number of tasty appetizers but we usually stick with the Mushrooms Neptune (mushroom caps stuffed with cream cheese and crab). The real winner with this appy is the cream cheese and it goes great with the complimentary sourdough bread.
This is the steak that I came for… the 16 oz Rib Steak, Chicago style (charred outside) and cooked to medium rare with mushrooms and onion strings and a twice baked potato. The ribeye is very flavourful with great marbling and the charred bark on the surface contrasts nicely with the tender medium rare inside. If you’ve never had a twice baked potato, you should definately give it a shot… they take a regular baked potato, scoop out the innards and mix it with bacon bits and then spoon the mixture back into the potato skin shell and bake the whole thing all over again.
The Keg’s Lobster Summer menu is almost over so we had to try their Seafood Sirloin which takes their regular top sirloin and tops it with scallops, shrimp, and lobster (it’s very similar to their Oscar Sirloin but with added lobster meat).
Try to save room for dessert because you’ll want to try out a few things… S’mores anyone?
The Passion Crème Brulée came in a really small espresso cup and didn’t really have a passion fruit taste to it… it tasted more like guava to me.
The dessert you should try is their Brownie Sundae. The chocolate brownie would taste great on it’s own but they also top it off with vanilla ice cream and loads of whipped cream.
The great thing about chain restaurants like the Keg is that they always try to please their customers. Our nephew’s order was mixed up and he got a regular baked potato instead of a twice baked potato. When we told our waiter, he quickly had a twice baked potato brought out for us at no charge (so our nephew wound up with two potatoes for the price of one). I’m just imagining what a regular Chinese restaurant waitress would do in this situation… probably look down at you and try to convince you that you were the one who was wrong.
