Milestones (West Van) – Pear and Coconut Pancakes
Brunch. What is it about brunch that makes it so awesome? On a Sunday morning, who really wants to wake up early to have a great breakfast? By the time we’re up and about, it’s a bit too late for breakfast and too early for lunch.
We were running some errands the other day and went looking for somewhere to pick up a bite but we noticed that a lot of restaurants weren’t open yet so we decided to drop by Milestones for brunch.
We started out with their daily soup special – Tomato and Red Pepper Soup. There’s nothing better than tomato soup on a cold fall morning to warm you up and start you on your day.
We almost always get the Spicy Thai Chicken Drummettes when we go to Milestones. Since I was planning on having the carb-rich pancakes, I figured this would be a good pairing to get some protein.
The fluffy Californian Omlette comes with bacon, avocado salsa, roma tomatoes, cheddar, breakfast potatoes, and multigrain toast. The omlette was pretty good and so were the potatoes but the toast was a bit bland (even with the peanut butter and jam spread) unlike the toast we had at The Bakehouse at Dundarave.
A new item on Milestones brunch menu is their Pear and Coconut Pancakes topped with sauteed pears, lime mascarpone cream, drizzled with vanilla syrup and topped off with powdered sugar. The mascarpone was a nice alternative to butter and the pancakes were perfectly soft on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside (I prefer this type of pancake over the big doughy pancakes you usually get at most breakfast places).
The only thing that I would have preferred was to have the syrup on-the-side so I could control the amount used. Since the syrup was pre-drizzled, by the end of my meal, the bottom pancakes had gotten a bit mushy from soaking in the syrup.
It turns out that a lot of other people decided on going for brunch as well because it was pretty packed in Milestones. Fortunately, it’s a pretty big restaurant so we didn’t have a problem getting a table but the service was a bit sparse because it was so busy.
The last time we were here, we tried the Lobster Frites on their seasonal menu… I like how they change their menu every now and again.
