The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant – Asian Lettuce Wraps

We were a bit disappointed recently when we stopped by Dockside Restaurant around 11am for lunch only to find out that their lunch menu didn’t start until 11:30am.  Not really feeling in the mood for breakfast, we stayed for a quick bite and then headed down to The Sandbar afterwards for the lunch we were hoping for.

It’s only been about 3 months since we’ve last been to The Sandbar but it looks like they’ve changed their complimentary bread from freshly baked loaves to smaller rolls.  The rolls are a bit crustier but they still go great with the dollops of real butter.

Even better, the bread is perfect for dipping in the coconut red curry sauce that comes with the Blue Shell Mussels.  The mussels were plump and fresh but it was the creamy and slightly spicy sauce that really made this dish tasty.  I’ve got to remember to come back and try their Mussels Mania.

I’m not sure why they served the Pan Fried Oysters with the tobiko on the side… the last time we were here, the tobiko and chili lime aioli came served atop the crispy oysters.

We also ordered the Asian Lettuce Wraps – they came with plenty of chicken, mushrooms, Asian slaw and perfectly shaped iceberg lettuce wrappers.  Don’t you hate it when you go to a Chinese restaurant and they don’t give you enough lettuce for the wrappers?

What’s the best way to eat lettuce wraps without making a huge mess?  There’s a few key step… First, you have to start out with well formed lettuce wraps (preferably with no holes or tears in the lettuce).  Second, resist the urge to overfill your lettuce wrapper.   Third, as you take your first bite, linger a while and slurp the juices before they have a chance to fall on your shirt (kind of like how you suck the soup out of juicy xiao long bao dumplings).

The Sandbar always provides great service.  When we finished our meal, our server brought us large, piping hot towels to clean up with (these weren’t like those puny towels that they give you at Chinese restaurants).
