Northern Delicacy – Dim Sum in Aberdeen Mall
We were trying to get a jump start on some errands in Richmond the other day and decided to stop in to Northern Delicacy located on the 2nd floor of Aberdeen Mall for some dim sum. Unfortunately, they didn’t open until 11am on Sunday so we wound up doing some shopping in the mall first (is it just me or is there not a lot of good stores to shop in at Aberdeen other than food places?).
We wound up sitting at one of the booths and the first thing that we noticed as we sat down was that the large wooden bench was quite hard. I could see how it had nice clean lines from a design perspective, but a couple of cushions would have made our “landing” a lot more comfortable.
We started out with the Pork Belly with Preserved Veggies with Rice served in a hot pot (mui choy kau yuk). We really liked this dish… the fatty pork just melts in your mouth and the yummy, sweet and savory soy sauce was perfect over rice. I think the menu listed this at around $14 but it only cost $7.95 so we must have wound up with the lunch version. We almost ordered another one of these to go… almost (maybe next time).
The Xiao Long Bao were pretty good although I didn’t think the soup had as much flavour as I would have liked.
You know how we can tell that we’re getting older? We’re starting to order Gai Lan at dim sum. I don’t think these were on the menu… it’s just one of those things that you have to ask for. Oddly enough, this was the most expensive dish that we ordered at $11.95.
We also decided to have some Pork Shao Mai. These aren’t like the regular Cantonese-style shao mai that we normally get but I thought they were really good. The pork and veggie filling was both juicy and tender and the different ingredients that they use was a refreshing take on the standard shao mai that we are so accustomed to.
I was pleasantly surprised by the service that we received as well. The servers come by quite frequently to refill your tea cups (they refilled our tea 5 or 6 times during our 1/2 hour visit).
