Jimoco Cafe & Pasta – More Than Just Pasta?
It seems like everyone comes to Jimoco Cafe for their 2-for-1 pasta special – but when I found myself out in Coquitlam early one Saturday morning, pasta was the furthest thing from my mind… I needed a real breakfast.
Having recently been to Jimmy’s Place on North Road, I figured that Jimoco would be an interesting place to try. From the outside, when I got to Jimoco’s, I wouldn’t have even guessed that they serve breakfast due to the large 2-for-1 pasta sign they have in the window.
The interior is a bit dark with various shades of wood-tones. The booths have tall dividers/back rests so it’s easy to feel a bit isolated during quiet times.
It was a cold morning out so I started with a piping hot, frothy Hot Chocolate.
For my breakfast, I picked the Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese Benedict. The benny took a while to arrive because they were still making the hollandaise sauce when I ordered. At least we know that they make it fresh. Plus, it gave me the opportunity to enjoy the Jack Johnson album (To The Sea) that was playing in the background.
The poached eggs were completely cooked throughout – no runny bits whatsoever. Everyone has their own preferences to poached eggs but I prefer mine with a nice runny yolk that oozes out as you pierce it. I’m not sure if they overcooked the eggs because they were still busy making the hollandaise sauce or if they always fully cook the poached eggs here. The saving grace was that the hollandaise sauce was good and the benny had a nice creamy texture to it (probably from the cream cheese).
The potatoes were really good too – crispy and browned on the outside while still being a bit soft when you bit into them. The salad was a bit of a miss for me. I prefer my salads to not need the assitance of a knife to cut the leafy greens. In this case, the greens were a little too big and messy to eat without cutting them down a bit.
Despite the eggs being over-cooked the benny was actually not too bad.
