Griffins – Dessert Buffet

As I mentioned on our post on Hapa Izakaya, we weren’t completely satiated so we decided to walk up to Griffins in the Hotel Vancouver for their famous dessert buffet.

If you haven’t heard, their dessert buffet is only $15 by itself or free with your order of an entrée.  Considering some of the entrées were only $30, I was seriously thinking of ordering a meal (eating a bit and taking most of it home) and then focussing on the desserts.  But, as it turns out, we weren’t that starving (since we had just finsihed a meal at Hapa Izakaya) and just opted for the desserts.

The desserts are located in a tiny station but don’t let that deter you.  There are plenty of choices (like the Oreo Tart with Bananas above) and they refill and replace desserts often enough.  The tart above had plenty of banana flavour… probably more so than the banana bread that we also picked up.

The Chocolate and Vanilla Mousse with White Chocolate Shavings was satiny smooth and one of the standouts of the night.

As I mentioned, the Banana Bread (centre in picture below) wasn’t very banana-y.  Also on the plate was a Flan and a Mango Mousse.

I suppose if you want to be a little more healthy, you could go for the fresh fruit (cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, pineapple, strawberries).  But this is a dessert buffet so you might as well throw in some Profiteroles (cream puffs) for good measure.

Another winner was the Crème Caramel.  The texture was quite smooth and reminded me of Dau Fu Fa (a Chinese dessert made with silky soft tofu and syrup).  It’s easy to burn or overcook crème caramel (which will make it taste bitter) but they nailed it at Griffins.

The Raspberry Mousse was very berry… a little too much for my liking.  But I did enjoy the chocolate cup filled with what I think was some type of mango mousse and topped with a raspberry.

Next time around, I’ll remember to come back to Griffins and order a meal to go along with the dessert buffet.
