Kaya Malay Bistro
Kaya Malay Bistro, located near A Taste of Vietnam along West Broadway, is a relatively new restaurant that has opened up. Never one to pass up a good roti, when we found ourselves in search for some lunch in Fairview, I couldn’t help but stop by.
The interior of this restaurant still has that “new restaurant” vibe to it where everything is clean and shiny. It’s actually a bit dim inside (perhaps due to the tall ceilings) but we managed to grab a table near the windows.
Our friendly waitress brought us some sample virgin piña colado drinks (which had a distinctive coconut flavour to it) while we were perusing the menu.
Unsure on what to order, we opted for the Appetizer Sampler for Two ($15) which came with roti canai, chicken satay, vegetarian samosas, calamari and salad. I have to admit that the roti was as good as any other that I’ve had in Vancouver with the perfect balance of crispiness on the outside layers and chewiness on the inside layers.
It’s not a true visit to a Malaysian restaurant unless you have a laksa… the lunch special Singapore Laksa ($8) is served in a rich coconut broth with shrimp, chicken, bean sprouts, egg, fish cakes and tofu puffs. It was good rendition and I found myself drinking a fair amount of the flavourful broth.
We felt like we needed some veggies so we ordered a side order of Sayur Lemak ($6). While the menu described this dish as okra, eggplant, and green beans simmered in lemak curry sauce sauce, there was actually a fair amount of broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots as well.
Lastly, we ordered the lunch special Rendang Beef ($8). I find that this can be a hit or miss in different restaurants but I really enjoyed the one at Kaya as the beef was quite tender.
