Bob’s Submarine Shop – Quintessential Dive in Richmond
The title says it all… Bob’s Submarine Shop IS the quintessential “dive” in Richmond. Located across from the New Town Bakery in the same strip mall as Excelsior, Bob’s is open early in the morning for breakfast… which is why I came by on a Saturday morning.
The interior to this place looks like it hasn’t been changed in years… from the old globe lights to the well-worn tables and chairs. But let’s face it, if you’re coming here for breakfast, you probably aren’t coming for the atmosphere.
When I showed up at 8am, it was completely deserted save for the little old Asian lady that was working the flat grill. However, it seems like this place isn’t a secret because people started to trickle in as time went by.
There really wasn’t much to say about the Hot Chocolate that I picked up ($1.50) other than it kind of reminded me of what you would get out of an old-school vending machine (right down to the paper cup).
I couldn’t help but order Bob’s Big Breakfast ($6) which is a really good value for the amount of food that you get. Three eggs cooked to your liking along with three bacon strips, three sausages, shredded hash browns, and buttered toast.
The eggs were perfectly cooked and the bright yellow yolks had the perfect amount of runniness for my liking (I just wanted to sop it all up with the hash browns and toast). The bacon was equally well executed with a good crisp and crunch to each piece. And do I really need to say anything more about the plump and juicy sausages? Aside from being a little greasy (what were you expecting?), the breakfast was really satisfying and this little dive reminded me a bit like the Fraser Park Restaurant in Burnaby.
Don’t expect too much service here… you order at the counter and they call you when it’s ready to be picked up. Plus, all of the utensils and condiments are all self-serve. If you’re looking for the ketchup, it’s located in the fridge next to the counter (but if you’re a bit more adventurous, try your hash browns with some sriracha sauce).
So, okay… I couldn’t come all this way and not try out a sub… especially since I heard such great things about the Super Sub ($5.90 for 6″ or $11.80 for 12″). I ordered one to go and was quite surprised at how hefty this aluminum foil wrapped torpedo was. When I cracked this open at home I found out why people rave about it… the bun was barely able to hold all of the fillings. Speaking of which, the filling had double steak, double cheese, mushrooms, salami, capicolla, and my favourite… killer sautéed onions
I’m not sure if there really is a “Bob” at this place. Doesn’t it seem like there are a lot of restaurants named “Bob ___” (like Bob Likes Thai Food)? If you’re looking for some good stick-to-your-gut eats and aren’t afraid of a little grease (or heart disease), try checking out Bob’s Submarine Shop.
