White Spot (Metrotown) – Peanut Butter, Bacon & Jalapeño Bigger Burger
The White Spot at Metrotown is actually not really at Metrotown per se but rather a few blocks east of the large shopping complex. It’s not to be confused with the nearby Triple O’s that’s only a few more blocks down the road either.
The “Metrotown” location has plenty of seating and has a pretty interesting bar with a waterfall flowing behind the many bottles of booze (it’s a little difficult to see in the picture below).
White Spot, known for their Legen… (wait for it) dary! burgers is highlighting special “Burger Guest Stars”. Gourmet burgers (among macarons, crayfish, izakayas, and donuts) are among some of the trendy food items that’s been making the rounds around the fickle Vancouver food scene over the past year or so.
I stopped by for lunch one weekend and couldn’t help but order the Peanut Butter, Bacon & Jalepeño Bigger Burger ($12.49)
Okay, after you stop going “Ew!”, open up your mind to the craziness… They take a 6 oz. 100% fresh Canadian beef burger and top it off with peanut butter, chopped bacon, jalapeño peppers, mayo, lettuce, and tomato. The burger itself was fresh and meaty (and who doesn’t love bacon?). The peanut butter doesn’t really overwhelm the burger and the jalapeño peppers had more of a piquant taste than actually spiciness.
The burger was a bit messy and the bun had difficulty containing all of the fixings – I wound up knife-and-forking it after a while.
In addition to the new burgers, they’ve also introduced some interesting renditions of poutine that’s sure to raise the cholesterol levels of many patrons.
The Santa Fe Poutine ($3.99) takes crispy fries and tops them off with melted cheese curds, gravy, black bean avocado salsa, sour cream, and pulled pork! The pulled pork was excellent with the gravy laden fries but I don’t think the sour cream was needed.
I have to give props to White Spot for trying out new stuff to keep their menu fresh. I just hope they don’t go overboard trying to keep up with trendy foods and get rid of my favourite staples. Gee, I feel like having a Pirate Pak right now!
