Kam Do Bakery – “Old Lady Cakes”

After hitting up Bob’s Submarine Shop in Richmond, I noticed the bright signs of Kam Do Bakery across the street (next to the Shoppers Drug Mart at Richmond Centre).  This location is much more convenient than their other location on Alexandra Road since it is so close to the Brighouse Canada Line station.

Like most Chinese bakeries, the set up of Kam Do is mostly self-serve with patrons picking and choosing various pastries and bringing them to the counter to pay.

They actually have 2 different egg tarts here… one with a hard-type shell and another with the puff pastry shell.  I wound up picking the puff pastry shell because the hard shell looked a little burnt.

The Pineapple Bun and BBQ Pork Buns were made quite well.  I was surprised at how much meaty filling was in the BBQ Pork Bun and it was shaped into a perfect dome.  If I had to choose, I would probably pick these over the ones at Maxim’s.

Of course, the thing that people come to Kam Do Bakery for is the “old lady cake” or Wife Cake (Lo Por Beng).  The thin and delicate skin enveloping the winter melon paste was quite flaky – you have to take a lot of care in picking these up to eat.

We came back here recently and tried a few of their other pastries.  The ginormous Pineapple Coconut Bun is covered with the same yummy sugary crust you find on a regular pineapple bun.

We also picked up a Garlic and Ham Bun and a Curry Beef Bun.  I was a bit disappointed that the Garlic and Ham Bun didn’t have much ham in it.  There were only a few pieces of ham on the left and right side of the bun and nothing in the middle.  The Curry Beef Bun, however, had plenty of filling inside including some really large pieces of onion that I enjoyed due to the pungent flavour of the onions.
