Nice Cafe – It was a Nice Cafe
I was searching high and low for the proper way to describe this little restaurant on East 8th (just off Main Street) and the thing that kept coming into my mind was that it was a “nice cafe”. I suppose they chose the right name. It’s not exactly the “Super Terrific Happy Cafe” but it’s also not the “Dreary Cafe from h-e-double-hockey-sticks”.
It’s often difficult to find good breakfast places open in the morning and this place was fairly busy at 9am on the rainy November weekend that I visited. I started off my meal on this cold day with a Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream ($2.00) The whipped cream was overflowing and helped to moderate the temperature of the hot chocolate.
I also ordered up a Side of Bacon ($2.95) that I enjoyed because it was really crispy.
For my actual breakfast, I picked the Alberni Benny ($7.75) which is served with smoked salmon and crispy shredded hashbrowns with green onions. They asked me how I wanted the eggs poached and I opted for soft since I like a runny yolk. This was by far the runniest yolk that I’ve had anywhere and I’m surprised to say that I would have preferred to have it cooked for a couple more seconds. Still, that didn’t stop me from sopping it up with the crispy hashbrowns.
The food’s pretty good and I guess it would fall in the category of a greasy spoon diner (yes, one of the utensils was a bit dirty).
