U & I Thai – Red Curry Duck with Lychee
Just before Christmas last year, we were making a concerted effort to avoid shopping at malls due to all of the crowds. We found ourselves around the Cambie area and I remembered that there was a new Thai restaurant that opened up in the old SalaThai spot.
They’ve done some nice remodelling of the interior with sleek reds and browns… pretty much the only thing that resembles the old restaurant is the large skylight in the middle of the room.
We started out our meal with the Chicken and Pork Satay ($8.95) – peanut sauce and cucumber relish with deep fried rice vermicelli. Aside from the fact that the waitress just dropped the dish on our table (almost thought it was going to break), I thought the pork was a little over-cooked but the chicken skewers were better.
Red Curry Duck with Lychee ($15.95) – coconut milk, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, and fresh Thai basil. This dish was divine – I could eat it every day. It had a moderate yet respectable amount of heat from the red curry and a bit of sweetness from the lychee.
Last up was the U & I Mixed Seafood Combo ($17.95) – basa, prawn, squid, mussels, bell peppers, and onion in a red curry and mango sauce. Like the pork satay, I thought the seafood was a bit over-cooked but otherwise not too shabby.
Afterwards, we hit up Lemonade Gluten Free Bakery for some yummy gluten free treats.
