HK BBQ Master
Located in the parking garage of the Richmond Superstore, it’s easy to see how you could miss HK BBQ Master unless you were specifically looking for it.
This is one busy BBQ joint… at lunchtime, there’s a line up out the door. As typical in a lot of Chinese butcher shops however, everything is very efficient and they get the line moving pretty quick. I have vivid memories as a child of watching butchers down in Chinatown quickly chopping up various meat orders with their large cleavers and wondering how they could do it so quickly without losing a finger.
While there are a few tables where you can sit down to eat, most people get their orders to go. There’s not much variety to their menu so make sure you’re in the mood for BBQ meats (which can be either ordered as-is or served on rice).
The #7 is a mix of BBQ Duck and Soya Chicken with green onion/ginger sauce served over rice for $8. I noticed that there seemed to be more duck pieces than chicken pieces in my order (not sure if that’s typical).
The #6 is a mix of BBQ Pork and Roasted Pork on rice for $8. Loved the BBQ pork – you really have to eat this when it’s fresh to understand what I mean. The meat was so tender and juicy – one of the best I’ve had in a long time. The roasted pork came with the crunchy pork crackling that everyone loves.
Overall, I found most of the meats to be pretty standard compared with other Chinese BBQ butchers but the BBQ pork was really good when it was fresh. All of the dishes were quite oily though but I suppose that’s to be expected given all of the drippings.
