Kitty Kate’s Cafe
With the renovations of the nearby Edmonds Community Centre, it seems like there’s a number of new shops opening up… one of which is Kitty Kate’s Cafe that we visited in early May
It’s your basic soup, sandwich, muffin, and coffee shop that’s run by two long-time East Burnaby residents. There’s a front counter facing the street to let patrons people-watch as well as a small sit down table off to one corner of the shop.
I decided on the Soup and Sandwich special ($8.50) which came with Borscht and my choice of sandwich. The borscht was served piping hot with a generous dollop of sour cream that could be mixed in with the beets, celery, and cabbage. Overall, the flavours were subtle but slightly on the sweet side due to the beets. This is a dangerous soup to consume if you’re wearing a white shirt so be forewarned… my lips were bright red for hours afterwards.
My sandwich was made-to-order and contained turkey, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, and pickles.
That dense little muffin that you see is their Maple Bacon Muffin ($2.50). When I broke it open, I could smell the aroma of maple syrup but, oddly enough, couldn’t really taste much of it. You can also see the small chunks of bacon that goes into the muffin… it might not be enough to satisfy someone with a big bacon craving and was slightly on the drier side but it would work perfectly for dipping into the soup.
They’re currently open from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday.
