Fuji Market Sushi (Whistler 2013) – Hidden Gem

Whistler, like many tourist destinations, has no shortage of places to dine out.  However, despite being called a “dog-friendly” town, your options are limited if you actually want to dine out with your pooch.  Sure, there are plenty of restaurants with patios that will let you tie up your dog just outside of the patio… but this species segregation really isn’t for us.

I understand that it’s not the fault of the restaurants as there are supposedly “health concerns” but it’s interesting that they will allow guide dogs in restaurants.  I’m not entirely sure why a guide dog is any less of a health concern than any other well-behaved dog.  If it was a nuisance or allergy issue, I have to say that I’ve been to many restaurants where parents let their screaming kids cry or run around the restaurant for the entire meal or a neighbouring patron has showered in a noxious cologne/perfume… and nobody seems to make a big fuss about it.

Anyways… Fuji Market Sushi is tucked away behind the Whistler Conference Centre (near the Subway) but is well worth a visit.  Inside, you can find Japanese grocery store items as well as pre-made and made-to-order food.  After 8:30pm the pre-made sushi is 50% off.

The reason why we came here was because they had a small sheltered area outside of the market with stools so we were able to enjoy our lunch with our pup.

The Chicken Katsu Donburi ($8.50) came with onions and egg and topped with shredded nori.  Despite not being able to finish all of the rice, I really enjoyed this rice bowl.

The Karaage Box ($12) came with an order of California roll, a small salad, and miso soup.  The boneless chicken pieces were tender and crispy at the same time and were quite good… I always prefer the boneless karaage over the places that just use chicken wings.

The inside of the market is kind of neat as they’ve kind of re-created an outdoor street scene on the inside.

I think they must do a lot of take-out business because there’s really only a couple of booths inside if you want to eat there.

However, there is an adjoining restaurant called Harajuku Izakaya if you’re looking for an actual restaurant experience.

The market is open from 10am to 10pm, 7 days a week and you can find some good deals on sushi here.

It’s a good place to go if you’re not looking at breaking the bank at one of the more expensive Japanese restaurants in the central village area.
