Old Bavaria Haus – Potato Pancakes and Schnitzel

We had a hankering for some good schnitzel recently so we wound up at Old Bavaria Haus in New West.  Because this restaurant is located in a remodelled historic house, there are different dining areas (this time we wound up on the west side of the house).

On our last visit, we tried the Coquille St. Jacques (scallops in whipped potatoes) so we wanted to try a few other appies.  The Escargot Bourguignon ($8.95) comes with half a dozen tender snails baked in a garlic herb butter sauce – not the least bit rubbery.

The Roasted Garlic Potato Pancakes ($7.95) came served with a rich mushroom sauce.  These are very much like pancakes… not as good as the thin potato pancakes that we had at Fraser Park Restaurant but pretty good nonetheless.

The Schnitzel Charlotte ($23.95) was topped with baby shrimp, a single scallop and real crab meat and came with the usual veggies, pan fried potatoes, and red cabbage.  I think I liked the Cordon Bleu Pacific that I had last time a bit more because of the sauce (but the schnitzel was perfect).

The Combination Dinner ($23.95) is the only way to go if you’ve never been here before.  They give you the best of everything:  schnitzel, beef rouladen (love the pickles in the rouladen), spätzle, and bratwurst.

If you’re not completely full after your meal, they do have some interesting desserts.  The Peaches Melba is served with delicious vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and strawberry sauce.

If you’re looking for a hearty dinner in New West, this is a good place to try.
