Thai House (Richmond) – Long Island Duck in Red Curry
We go to a lot of Thai restaurants but Thai House has always been one of our favourite chains. Unfortunately, they closed the one at Station Square when they started the big reconstruction work. We’ve been to the Thai House in Richmond in the past many years ago, but we tend to forget that it’s there (just like the Sun Sui Wah in the same complex).
Since we’ve been spending a lot of time in Richmond lately (and we were getting tired of the food at the mall), we headed over to the Thai House across from Lansdowne.
If you’re going to order something spicy, it’s a good idea to grab a Lime Soda ($3.50) to help cut through the heat. The Pad Thai – Traditional ($12.50) comes with a tomato sauce as opposed to a tamarind sauce but I don’t mind that. There’s a good collection of shrimp, egg, and crunchy bean sprouts in this dish as well.
We’ve always liked their House Seafood Combination ($16.50) because they’re not shy with the seafood and they know how to cook it. Too many places overcook their seafood so it turns rubbery but this dish was spot on and had mussels, prawns, and squid in their special house sauce.
This next dish is their Long Island Duck in Red Curry ($16). It’s impressively served in a fresh coconut shell but what the menu doesn’t tell you is that they include tender shavings of coconut meat in the curry. While I like coconut milk, I’m usually not a big fan of coconut itself. But these tender morsels of coconut slivers are awesome. The curry isn’t ostentatiously hot but has a nice kick to it. Originally, we didn’t order rice with this dish but our waiter talked us into it and it was a good idea to sop up all of the curry sauce.
Our server was really friendly and helpful (looked like he really liked his job).
