Wok Box (Queensborough Landing)
Wok Box is a franchise that grew out of Edmonton, Alberta and has spread across Canada and into the States. This particular location is in the busy Queensborough Landing area of New West.
On our visit, the place was completely empty… perhaps the abundance of places that you can get asian food in the Lower Mainland has something to do with that. In any case, the interior is fairly clean and spacious. You order your meal at the counter and they bring it out to your table.
While they have a number of set dishes to order from, you have the option to customize the protein and starch as they cook it all to order. You have the choice of chicken, beef, tofu or veggies with your noodle dishes (or shrimp for an additional $1). The fresh veggies include carrots, bok choy, napa cabbage, onions, broccoli, and peppers.
For our meal, we picked the Hong Kong Spice ($6.29 lunch size) with an 18 spice curry blend and chow mein noodles along with chicken as well as the Pad Thai ($6.99 lunch size) with a spicy Bangkok tamarind sauce and ribbon noodles with shrimp. We also opted to make one meal a combo for $2.99 which gave us 2 veggie spring rolls and a drink.
I could really taste the freshness and spices in the Hong Kong Spice. As for the pad thai, I thought it was a little two saucy for my liking, but it wasn’t too bad. The spring rolls were freshly fried up and had a nice crispness from the thin wrapper (although the inside was a little doughy). If you’re looking for “authentic” asian cuisine, you’re probably in the wrong place… but, overall, it was actually better than I expected.
