Pho Chung Nam – New West Vietnamese Food
Pho Chung Nam is a Vietnamese restaurant located on 6th Avenue in New Westminster that gets a fairly steady amount of local foot traffic during the lunch hour rush.
On my first visit, I arrived just before noon and the restaurant was eerily quiet. The staff were all congregated in one section, apparently waiting for the rush of diners to arrive. Sure enough, by the time I finished my meal, the restaurant had gotten much busier.
The Special Beef Rice Noodle in Soup ($8.75) was served with rare beef, brisket, tendon, tripe, and beef balls in a big bowl with rice noodles underneath. I found that the rice noodles were slightly stuck in a clump at first. The broth was light and the thinly shaved rare beef had a hint of pink to it. I found that the brisket was a bit chewy but the thick tendon pieces that I found in the bottom of the bowl were quite tender. Wish there were more tripe in the bowl because they were really small pieces.
I came back for a revisit two weeks later and tried one of their special dishes… $12.50 for 2 Grilled Skewered Pork (that weren’t actually served on skewers), 2 Minced Shrimp on Sugar Cane, Minced Pork Spring Roll served with vermicelli noodles. The vermicelli was better on this occassion as it was not clumpy and I thought that the tightly packed spring roll had a good crisp to it even though they didn’t use rice paper. The pork was thinly sliced but I liked how flavourful the pork patty was. Of course, you can’t go wrong with shrimp on sugar cane… the filling was moist and went well with the various sauces at the table.
Overall, service was fairly friendly and the food was slightly above average.
