The Poke Guy: Best Poke in Vancouver
2016 seemed to be the year that poke took a real foothold in Vancouver with countless poke shops popping up all over the place. The problem, however, is that most of the places calling themselves “poke” shops really weren’t staying true to the original poke from Hawaii.
To me, you need to have your seafood marinated in the special sauces to taste like the real thing… otherwise, you’re just eating sashimi. Fortunately, The Poke Guy seems to have figured that out. They’ve also figured out that, while toppings are great, the real star of the show is the seafood… and it has to be fresh. So don’t be surprised if they run out of your favourite dish because they don’t make huge batches… once they’re sold out – they’re sold out for the day.
The Poke Guy has a very simple menu… we chose the Lil’ Guy which is two scoops of poke with a max of 5 sides. You put that down on a base of either white rice, brown rice, or salad and then add crunchy toppings and drizzled sauce.
The first dish had a mix of wild salmon and ahi tuna with imitation crab, mango, corn, seaweed salad and nori.
The second dish had a mix of tako (ocotopus) and ahi tuna with mango, avocado, edamame, seaweed salad, and crispy onions.
While we haven’t tried all of the different poke places in Vancouver, The Poke Guy stands out as being one of the best options.
