Kamehameha Bakery (Hawaii 2017): Poi Glazed Donut

On our visit to Oahu this year, we decided that we’d rent a car and head out to some of the places on the windward side of the island. Since we were heading out early, we figured the best thing to do would be to grab a quick snack from Kamehameha Bakery in the Kalihi area of Honolulu.

While Kamehameha Bakery has been around since 1978, many tourists only think of Leonard’s Bakery when someone mentions donuts in Honolulu. This busy little shop is situated in a nondescript mini mall and easy to pass by if you didn’t know where it was.

There is a good variety of donuts available here but the one that everyone seems to order is the poi glazed donut.

We ordered one each of the Strawberry and Poi Glazed Donuts ($0.95 each). OMFG – these were good! So light and puffy and glistening with glaze.

We saw people buying boxes of the the poi glazed donuts, and to be honest, if we knew these were going to be this good, we would have bought more. There’s really no where to eat these in the shop (other than a small bench) so most people grab them to go. The glaze, while delicious, does leave your fingers a bit sticky – but it’s well worth it.
