Da Hawaiian Poke Company (Hawaii 2017): Da Works!
As I mentioned previously, we were really looking forward to our trip to Hawaii because there’s really no substitute for Hawaiian poke. So it’s really no surprise that, after our visit to Ono Seafood, we headed over to another nearby poke place.
Da Hawaiian Poke Company is a relatively new spot that’s located in front of the Safeway (about half way between Ono Seafood and Leonard’s Bakery – on the opposite side of Kapahulu). On our visit, they had about 6 different styles of ahi poke along with 4 styles of salmon, 2 styles of tako, and even one made with Maine lobster.
We stuck with some of their popular choices… Hawaiian Style Ahi on the left and Da Works Ahi on the right.
The Hawaiian Style Ahi is a classic take on poke using Hawaiian salt, roasted kukui nut, crunchy limu (a Hawaiian term for seaweed or algae – in this case, it looked like ogo seaweed) and tossed with sesame oil.
Da Works Ahi was my favourite as it includes sweet Maui onions in the mix along with tobiko, furikake, chili flakes, crisp garlic, ogo seaweed, and has more flavour in the poke sauce.
Overall, I really enjoyed the poke here and they do have more selection to choose from than Ono Seafood.
