Leila’s Donair Town: Donairs in New West
Leila’s Donair Town is a tiny shop located on 12th Street in New Westminster, close to the Burnaby border, which serves up donairs, falafels, and shawarmas.
The shop, like most donair shops, is fairly basic with a couple of small tables that you can eat at. Most likely, they do a lot of take-out orders, especially for the local businesses and the nearby school. Above the rotating spits, you’ll find their basic menu offering.
I ordered the Mixed Chicken and Beef Donair ($6.50 for the “super” size) + $2 for a can of pop. It seemed like the lady that was serving me didn’t understand English very well and was a bit confused.
My donair was fairly basic with just cucumbers, meat, and sauce. The beef inside the pita was actually quite tender and there was plenty of meat inside this donair. I think I’m going to need to come back for a revisit to try their tabbouleh.
Two months later, I came back for an unexpected visit (well, unexpected for me). I immediately noticed that they’ve updated their menu on the rear wall and it seems cleaner and easier to read. I took an order of Lebanese Chicken Donair to go ($5.99) which included hummus and tabouleh, lettuce, onions, cucumbers, tzatziki, and hot sauce along with the slightly charred chicken. Needless to say, this was a bit messy to eat. Service was a bit better as there was a different lady that was working the counter and understood what I wanted to order.
