Modo Hawaii (Hawaii 2018): Mochi Donuts!

Our first experience with mochi donuts was with a Mister Donut in Akihabara in Japan where we got to try their famous Pon De Ring. For those of you unfamiliar, mochi donuts are dangerously addictive given how easy it is to polish them off. So when I saw that they opened up Modo Hawaii inside the International Marketplace, I knew that we would stop by here during our next visit to Waikiki.

Located in the Japanese-themed Mitsuwa Marketplace on the 2nd floor of the International Marketplace, Modo Hawaii is a small donut shop tucked away in the back which serves up these delicious mochi donuts in a variety of cool flavours ranging in prices of about $2-$3 each.

On our first visit, we picked up the Strawberry, Lilikoi (passionfruit), Cookies and Cream, and Kuro Black Sesame. While the cookies and cream is their most popular seller, we really enjoyed the black sesame. The strawberry was slightly sweet and the lilikoi was slightly tart but all of the donuts were amazing. There’s something really satisfying about pulling apart these donuts and enjoying the textural contrast between the slight crispness of the exterior with the mochi-chewiness of each bite.

The not-so-subliminal message in the box must have worked on us because we came back for a second round of donuts later in the week. This time, we picked up the White Chocolate, Azuki (red bean), Kuro Black Sesame, and Key Lime. While there is food court seating inside Mitsuwa, we brought these babies back to our hotel so we could enjoy the view from our patio (and so people wouldn’t gawk at us while we greedily devoured them). The kuro was just as good as on our last visit but the azuki and the spring-like key lime were right up there too.

If you haven’t tried these mochi donuts, that’s good… stay away – I want them all for myself!
