Da Spot Health Foods and Juices Food Truck (Hawaii 2018): Butter Garlic Shrimp

One of the iconic food items from Hawaii (aside from poke) is garlic shrimp… specifically from the countless food trucks that dot the North Shore of Oahu. But if you’re not in the mood for a road trip, you can find garlic shrimp in the heart of Waikiki. We came across a couple of food trucks on the corner lot of Kuhio Avenue and Kanekapolei, next to the Food Pantry.

One of the great things about this place is they had plenty of covered picnic tables where patrons could enjoy their meals. Since there were 2 food trucks, we decided to try both… the first of which was Da Spot Health Foods and Juices.

Their signature Butter Garlic Shrimp ($14) is served with a salad and your choice of regular or saffron rice (why would anyone choose anything other than saffron rice?)

The shrimp have already had their shells removed (which makes it easier to eat) and are swimming in a tomato-based broth. While quite tasty, these aren’t really like the garlic shrimp that you find on the North Shore. Pricewise, you get about 9 large shrimp for your money and we were very pleased with the way they turned out. But make sure you stay tuned for my next post on Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood right next door.
