Maguro Brothers Waikiki (Hawaii 2018): Sashimi and Poke
Maguro Brothers has a well known location in Chinatown in Honolulu but they’ve recently reopened a take-out shop in Waikiki along Nahua Street between Kuhio and Ala Wai Blvd. They only open in the evening so make sure you check out their hours before you head on over.
Unlike places like Ono Seafood that specializes in only poke, Maguro Brothers offers a nice selection of sashimi in addition to poke.
On our first visit, we picked half a pound of Hawaiian Limu Ahi Poke ($9.00) and also ordered the Chutoro Donburi with Uni and Ikura ($11.75 + $5.95 + $4.50). The glistening sheen on the ahi tuna was amazing… this is as fresh and as tasty as it gets.
Chutoro is the medium fatty part of the tuna while uni is sea urchin and ikura is salmon roe… they also add some tamgao for good measure. The uni here was as good as what we’ve had in Japan and I really enjoyed their fresh sashimi.
We came back a few days later at night and picked up the Chirashi Combo with Spicy Ahi Mayo ($16.25). Again, the sashimi here is so good! This dish includes tuna, tako, salmon, tamago and red tuna in addition to the spicy ahi poke.
The only unfortunate thing about this place is that there’s nowhere to sit. However, we managed to find a nearby area with covered tables to enjoy our food. If you’re staying in Waikiki and don’t want to head out to Chinatown, make sure to drop by their new location.
