Giovanni’s Aloha Shrimp Truck – Kahuku (Hawaii 2018): Overrated Shrimp Truck
One of the most famous garlic shrimp trucks of the North Shore of Oahu is Giovanni’s. Their iconic graffitied white shrimp truck located in Kahuku is always super busy and serving up mountains of their signature Scampi ($14).
It’s been a few years since we visited the North Shore and we were determined to try a bunch of shrimp trucks. Our first stop was at Giovanni’s and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with the shrimp here.
For the price, you receive 12 small shell-on shrimp that are sautéed in olive oil, garlic, lemon and butter. I found the whole dish to be overly oily and salty with no clear garlic flavour. The clumpy rice wasn’t able to handle all of the oil in this dish and turned a bit mushy.
If you’re looking to follow the crowds, sure – try their scampi… it’s a good experience.Just know that there’s much better garlic shrimp around. Out of the five garlic shrimp trucks that we tried this year, Giovanni’s comes in dead last. Fortunately, there’s lots of garlic shrimp trucks on the North Shore (and some great ones in Waikiki as well).
