Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp (Hawaii 2018): Butter Garlic Shrimp and Dole Whip
Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp is another one of the popular garlic shrimp stops along the windward coast of Oahu’s North Shore. It seems to be a popular stop for tour groups and we were lucky to arrive just before a large group of hungry tourists showed up.
Fumi’s Butter Garlic Shrimp ($13) comes with corn and two scoops of rice as well as a pineapple slice (similar to what we got at Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood in Waikiki). The plump shrimp here (8 pieces) are larger than what you’d find at the overrated Giovanni’s Aloha Shrimp Truck. In addition, while the shrimp didn’t look like they had a lot of garlic on this plate, they were surprisingly good and had a fair amount of garlicky flavour.
One of the things that I really liked about this place is that they also have Dole Whip ($4). The garlic shrimp here is a solid version and ranked #3 on our trip this year (just under Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood and Famous Kahuku Shrimp).
With the music playing in the background and the accessibility to a sink to wash our hands after our meal, Fumi’s is a nice respite on the North Shore for some tasty garlic shrimp. An interesting note is that diners appear to have been carving their names into the leaves of a large tree next to the covered picnic table area for quite some time.
