Fresh Ahi Off The Boat (Hawaii 2018): Bentos and Poke Bowls
After our trip to Lyon Arboretum, we were looking for some tasty treats so we hit up Fresh Ahi Off the Boat which is a few blocks away from Ala Moana Center. They serve up various Japanese bento boxes here as well as offering a make-your-own poke bowl station.
The B6 Bento – Teriyaki Chicken, Teriyaki Beef, and Unagi on Rice ($11.50) comes with miso soup and was a hit. The unagi was perfectly tender and the beef and chicken teriyaki were on point.
I decided to make my own Ahi Poke Bowl ($13.75) on a bed of black rice and topped with seared ahi, seared salmon, garlic chips, and masago. The black rice is more of a purple colour and turned out to be glutinous (sticky). While the ahi poke was good, I found the thick-cut seared fish was too dry (I suppose I was thinking it would be a thinner cut aburi-style). I wasn’t too thrilled with my bowl but I think it was just due to the items I picked.
