Liliha Bakery – Nimitz Hwy (Hawaii 2019): Loco Moco and Butter Rolls for Breakfast

A couple of years ago, we briefly visited Liliha Bakery on N Kuakini in the Liliha area of Oahu (the original location) while on a road trip around the island. Known for their signature coco puffs, we made sure to stop by their other location on the border between Kalihi and Downtown Honolulu to grab some breakfast during our visit this year.

This particular location on N Nimitz Hwy gets quite busy. Inside, they have a full-fledged restaurant as well a bakery where you can just pick up some yummy pastries. We started out with a couple of guava juices (can’t really go wrong with this when you’re in Hawaii).

After placing our order, they brought out this dish which turned out to be a complimentary dish of grilled, Butter Rolls. At first, we thought this was the corn bread that we ordered but we quickly realized that it wasn’t corn bread. In actuality, this was a truly amazing freebie. The bun was so buttery and soft on the inside but with a slight crispness to the outside from being grilled. They sell these rolls in their bakery… I’m sure they were trying to get us hooked on them like a dealer who’s pushing their wares… and it worked.

After a bit, our actual order of Corn Bread arrived at the table. It was okay but it’s difficult to follow up a dish like those butter rolls.

For my breakfast, I picked the BLT with Avocado ($11.95) which was served on a large, soft bun. I know this is a BLT, but there was a serious amount of bacon in this sammie.

We also ordered the Loco Moco with Fried Rice ($14.99). It doesn’t get much more Hawaiian than starting out your day with a big heaping portion of fried rice covered with a hamburger steak, gravy and fried eggs!

On our way out, we grabbed a Coco Puff and Cream Puff to go. You really want to eat these as soon as possible because they don’t hold up in the Hawaiian sun very long.
