AJ’s Brooklyn Pizza Joint: Brooklyn-Style Pizza
AJ’s is a popular pizza joint on Broadway known for their thin Brooklyn-style pizzas (although they also have thick crust Detroit-style pizzas as well). I’ve been meaning to try this place for a while and finally managed to visit in late October.
I decided to build my own pizza ($18 for a base 14″ pizza with tomato sauce) and added mushrooms, roasted red peppers, pepperoncini peppers, pineapples (+$2 for each veggie), spicy sausage, calabrese (+$3 for each meat), and roni cups (+$4). Not exactly the cheapest pizza as the toppings wound up costing as much as the pizza itself.
When I picked up the pizza, they said that they don’t usually recommend more than 3 toppings as the crust might not get as crispy as it should. But let me tell you that this turned out great. Since it took a while for me to get home in traffic, we tossed the pizza into the oven a bit to warm it up and the thin crust turned out perfectly. The wonderfully thin crust still retained a crispness to the bite while having a subtle chew. The pizza is cut into 6 large slices so partially folding the slice is the easiest way to eat it.
Just looking at this pizza makes my mouth water all over again. Make no mistake, if you want a pizza that’s fully loaded, don’t let them talk you out of it… just crisp it up a little bit more in the oven when you get home.
