Banh Mi Saigon: Banh Mi Dac Biet
If you asked what the perfect sandwich is, the banh mi would definitely rank high up there. There’s something about that freshly baked, crusty bread stuffed with flavours that explode in your mouth that just speaks so much more than a plain old bologna sandwich.
Victoria Drive is known for the number of great Vietnamese restaurants and Banh Mi Saigon is one which specializes in… you guessed it… banh mi! With covid still in effect, they have a pretty straight forward social distancing plan with 2 separate lines outside the store: 1 to lineup to get inside to place your order and 1 lineup to wait for them to call your number to pick up your order (they have a speaker system setup so you can hear them call your number). Don’t worry… the lineup moves pretty quick (unless you have someone in front of you placing an order for 10 banh mis).
I picked the Banh Mi Dac Biet ($6) which is their house special banh mi that comes with ham, headcheese, meatball, meatloaf, pate, homemade mayo, soy sauce, and veggies.
As I mentioned, the crusty bread is just as important as the filling in a good banh mi and the one at Banh Mi Saigon didn’t disappoint. As is typical, expect to have bread crumbs fly everywhere as you bite into this sandwich. The filling in this sandwich was also quite good. For $6, this makes a great meal. Keep in mind that it’s cash only here.
