Kamehameha Bakery (Hawaii 2018): Poi Haupia Donut

We first came across the legendary Poi Glazed Donut from Kamehameha Bakery in 2017. Located in the same industrial-looking mini mall as Young’s Fish Market, it wasn’t rocket science that we would come back here again. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived (just after noon), they were already sold out of their poi glazed donuts! 😦

Mochi Lab (Hawaii 2018): Butter Mochi Cupcakes

It’s hard to believe that I first stumbled across Mochi Lab’s amazing butter mochi cupcakes in 2015 while walking through a farmers’ market in Waikiki. While we’ve been back to Hawaii a couple times since then, we’ve never been able to revisit until this past year. That’s partly because Mochi Lab can only be found at pop up locations. We made a special trip out to the Honolulu Farmers’ Market, in front of the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Ward Avenue, to revisit this year and were not disappointed.

Banán Waikiki Beach Shack (Hawaii 2018): Go Bananas!

When I first saw the pictures of banana ice cream served up by a food truck called Banán, I knew that I wanted to try them out. However, with only a short amount of time in paradise, we never found the time to make it out to visit. As luck would have it, Banán has since opened up a location right in the heart of Waikiki, just steps away from the beach.

Modo Hawaii (Hawaii 2018): Mochi Donuts!

Our first experience with mochi donuts was with a Mister Donut in Akihabara in Japan where we got to try their famous Pon De Ring. For those of you unfamiliar, mochi donuts are dangerously addictive given how easy it is to polish them off. So when I saw that they opened up Modo Hawaii inside the International Marketplace, I knew that we would stop by here during our next visit to Waikiki.

Sakuraya Taiyaki: Tokyo 2017

After our extremely filling meal at Ginza Bairin, we walked to nearby Hakuhinkan Toy Park (a great place to check out your favourite cartoon or anime character). A couple of blocks away, in the Shinbashi area of Minato, is a tiny street-level taiyaki stand called Sakuraya Taiyaki.

Nenrinya Ginza: Tokyo 2017

Our first exposure to baumkuchen was earlier on our Japan trip when we came across Kyo-Baum in Kyoto. This German cake, which is made on a rotating spit, had us so enamoured that we specifically went looking for baumkuchen when we were in Tokyo.

Mister Donut (Akihabara): Tokyo 2017

When you’re this good… they call you “MISTER”. Seriously… I don’t know what else you can say about Mister Donut. Interestingly, Mister Donut originated in the US but is now headquartered in Japan. That probably explains why their mochi donut is soooo good.

Chez Lui (Tokyo Dome): Tokyo 2017

Breakfast in Japan usually turned out to be some type of bakery item for us (mainly because these were the places that were open when we were heading out). Not too far from our hotel, in the Meets Port building in Tokyo Dome City, is a small bakery called Chez Lui serving up unique French/Japanese pastries.

Kagetsudō Kaminarimon: Tokyo 2017

Ahhh… Melonpans! One of the main reasons for coming to Japan! If you’ve never heard of melonpans before, you couldn’t be blamed for expecting that these oddly shaped buns would taste like melon. But you’d be wrong! 🙂 No, these baked buns earn their name by resembling the shape of melons (kind of like how pineapple buns get their name because they look like pineapples).
