Tamura’s Market – Wahiawa (Hawaii 2019): Deli-Store Poke

One of the things that we discovered on our previous trips to Oahu is that you can get quality poke (diced raw fish) in just about any place. We found that out when we popped into a local grocery/liquor store called Tamura’s. Since that time, we’ve stopped by a few more of the Tamura’s locations whenever we’re on a road trip and needing something to eat.

Liliha Bakery – Nimitz Hwy (Hawaii 2019): Loco Moco and Butter Rolls for Breakfast

A couple of years ago, we briefly visited Liliha Bakery on N Kuakini in the Liliha area of Oahu (the original location) while on a road trip around the island. Known for their signature coco puffs, we made sure to stop by their other location on the border between Kalihi and Downtown Honolulu to grab some breakfast during our visit this year.

James Street Cafe: East Meets West for Breakfast

James Street Cafe has always been a bit of a mystery to me. The restaurant doesn’t actually sit on James Street and seems far from a typical cafe. We visited early one February morning for breakfast… something that they are supposedly well known for.

TerraCotta Boyz: Oodles of Noodles

TerraCotta Boyz is a Chinese noodle shop located in the Old Orchard Shopping Centre in Burnaby. This smallish shop has a few tables on one side of the store and a stand-up counter on the opposite side. Their menu is fairly basic but odds are that you’re coming here for their noodles.

YiFang Taiwan Fruit Tea (Robson): Refreshing Drinks

As their name would suggest, YiFang is a popular Taiwanese boba (bubble) tea shop which specializes in fruit teas. They’re also known for their black sugar pearls that are made in-house but those are only available at certain times during the day.

Eggspectation (Richmond): Montreal-Based Breakfast Joint

I think I had high “eggspectations” when I first visited this new breakfast eatery that opened up in Richmond late last year. Originally hailing from Montreal, Eggspectation is located in the former Ihop location next to the Accent Inn. But trust me, when you walk inside, it looks nothing like an Ihop.

Yan’s Garden Chinese Restaurant: Push Cart Dim Sum in Burnaby

So, Yan’s Garden has been on my list of places to try for a number of years (I suppose it’s partly because I used to watch “Wok with Yan” back in the 80’s). I’ve been hesitant to stop by here in the past mainly because parking always looked difficult here as the parking lot is generally always full.

Dundas Eat and Drink: East Van Fusion

For the better part of my childhood, I grew up in East Van… specifically, in the area close to the PNE. Back in the day, it was hardly the place known for being able to find restaurants of any kind. However, over the last few years, a new bunch of eateries have popped up around the northeast corner of Vancouver.

H Tasting Lounge: Cherry Blossom Festival Afternoon Tea

H Tasting Lounge is located in the lobby of the Westin Bayshore in the scenic Coal Harbour area of Vancouver. This small but spiffy dining area is a nod to one of their well-known guests… Howard Hughes who occupied the penthouse (of the then known Bayshore Inn) for 6 months back in the early 70’s. The sleek geometric lines, gold-hued accents, art deco decor and glitzy chandelier is most likely meant to evoke a sense of nostalgia for his earlier glamorous years before he became the recluse he was when he visited Vancouver.

Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria: Pizza on the Drive

Anyone remember back in the day when pizzas were called “pizza pies”? I mean, there’s that old Dean Martin song, That’s Amore… “When a moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that’s amore.” In any case, we were hankering for a nice pizza one weekend but we couldn’t decide where to get it from. We were looking for an actual sit-down restaurant where you could not only get a pizza but you could also get some pasta and other stuff… and I guess we’re a bit picky with our pizzas.

Romer’s Burger Bar: What’s in a Name?

While we’ve been to Romer’s Burger many times in the past, it’s been quite a while since we last visited. Their location in SE Vancouver has been around for quite some time but now, with all of the development on the Fraser Flats, getting here and finding parking can be a headache.

Kushi Mura Izakaya: Solid Japanese Snacking Options

Recently, Kushi Mura Izakaya opened up on the main floor of the Shops at New West (ie. New West Skytrain Station) at the western end closest to Quayside drive. Before you head over here, just keep in mind that parking rates here are high so you might be better off to find parking outside of the station.
