Carp Dori (Hawaii 2017): Yakitori

Thanks to the food stalls in the Shirokiya Japan Village Walk, we were able to relive many of our favourite food memories from our trip to Japan. One of our favourites was when we visited the tiny yakitori restaurants in Tokyo. After our okonomiyaki from Tokugawa, we decided to try a few skewers from Carp Dori, also located in the Japan Village Walk.

Tokugawa (Hawaii 2017): Okonomiyaki

During our trip to Japan last year, we tried many classic Japanese dishes including okonomiyaki (a popular grilled pancake filled with savory ingredients). While we enjoyed our meal at Toradyu Okonomiyaki, we had to make the okonomiyaki ourselves (which is quite a bit of work). So when we saw that we could get okonomiyaki made for us at the Shirokiya Japan Village Walk, we jumped at the opportunity.

Big Island Candies (Hawaii 2016) – Macadamia Nut Milk Chocolate Trio

If you’ve even been to Waikiki, you’ve probably seen how Honolulu Cookie Company has grown rapidly. In fact, you probably have family or friends who have brought back their pineapple-shaped shortbread cookies after vacationing in Hawaii. While HCC has grown rapidly since 1998, there’s another purveyor of shortbread cookies in Hawaii that’s been around since 1977. Starting in the Hilo industrial district of the Big Island, Big Island Candies is known both for their signature shortbread cookies as well as their chocolate products.

If you come to Hawaii, eventually, you’ll want to try some of the local cuisine. Last year, we had a great traditional feast at Ono Hawaiian Foods. Now, you might not expect traditional cuisine at a large mall food court… but you’d be happily surprised at the offerings at Poi Bowl.

Ala Moana Center is the largest mall in Hawaii and is located a few minutes away from Waikiki. On our last visit to Hawaii, we found this unique tea shop in Ala Moana called Lupicia Fresh Tea.
