Hi Five Chicken (Kingsway): Hit and Miss

Recently, Hi Five Chicken opened up a new location on Kingsway in Burnaby. I had a bit of trouble finding this place because I wasn’t expecting it to be in a part of the former Earl’s location and walked right past it a couple of times before realizing it was there.

Chicko Chicken (Edmonds): Korean Fried Chicken

Chicko Chicken is a franchise that specializes in Korean fried chicken. Recently, I noticed a small sliver of a storefront open up on Edmonds Street in Burnaby. The thing that caught my eye was that there wasn’t a door to get into the place! As it turns out, the shop’s entrance is actually located in the back parking lot… talk about a hole-in-the-wall!

Win Win Chick-N (Steveston): Filipino-Style Macaroni

Win Win Chick-N has been in Steveston for a couple of years now and have become so popular that they opened a location in Vancouver. Their Steveston shop is literally a hole-in-the-wall and we stopped by in late July. I’ve heard that it can get really busy here but we were fortunate that we showed up during a slow time (even then they said our chicken sandwich would take 15 mins).

Na-Re Korean Kitchen: Modern Korean Cuisine in Burnaby

Earlier this year, I noticed a new Korean restaurant on Edmonds Street in the former haunts of iThai so I dropped by for a visit in early January. The interior is a bit spartan in terms of decor but the servers were friendly and helpful.

Chewie’s Biscuit Co.: The Moose

Downlow Chicken Shack: Big Wings and Not-So-Secret Menu

I remember when the Downlow Chicken Shack first opened up… I must have went there at least twice only to be disappointed that they were sold out by the time I got to the door. Fast forward a bit over a year and I can finally say that I’ve tried DL and I understand why it’s always so busy.

Highlight by Re-Up BBQ: Mixed Feelings

Ok, so I’ll be very blunt… many years ago, I tried Re-Up BBQ and wasn’t very impressed so I’ve kind of steered clear of them for a long time. Recently, I heard of a new place that they opened up in New Westminster called Highlight by Re-Up BBQ, which takes aim at the breakfast-obsessed people with offerings of biscuits, pancakes, and sandwiches all enhanced with their usual BBQ offerings.

HiFive24 (Burnaby): Fried and Baked Chicken

About two years ago, a new entry into the fast-food fried chicken market opened up in Vancouver at the corner of SE Marine Drive and Main Street called HiFive24. Similar to Church’s Chicken, HiFive24 operates 24-hours so you can get your fix for fried chicken at any time of the day. Unlike Church’s, however, HiFive24 also offers up baked chicken in addition to fried chicken.

Church’s Chicken (South Burnaby): Crinkle Cut Fries and Gravy

Despite liking Church’s Chicken over places like KFC, it’s been quite a while since I hit up a Church’s. This fried chicken chain from Texas has a long history in the Lower Mainland (their first non-USA location was here).

Hi Five 24 – Baked and Fried Chicken

If you’re looking for comfort food, you don’t have to go much further than fried chicken. In the whole debate over who has the best fast food fried chicken in town… for my money, it’s always been Church’s > KFC. Of course, LA Chicken beats all of them but I put LA Chicken in a whole other class by themselves.
