Downlow Chicken Shack: Big Wings and Not-So-Secret Menu

I remember when the Downlow Chicken Shack first opened up… I must have went there at least twice only to be disappointed that they were sold out by the time I got to the door. Fast forward a bit over a year and I can finally say that I’ve tried DL and I understand why it’s always so busy.

Highlight by Re-Up BBQ: Mixed Feelings

Ok, so I’ll be very blunt… many years ago, I tried Re-Up BBQ and wasn’t very impressed so I’ve kind of steered clear of them for a long time. Recently, I heard of a new place that they opened up in New Westminster called Highlight by Re-Up BBQ, which takes aim at the breakfast-obsessed people with offerings of biscuits, pancakes, and sandwiches all enhanced with their usual BBQ offerings.

HiFive24 (Burnaby): Fried and Baked Chicken

About two years ago, a new entry into the fast-food fried chicken market opened up in Vancouver at the corner of SE Marine Drive and Main Street called HiFive24. Similar to Church’s Chicken, HiFive24 operates 24-hours so you can get your fix for fried chicken at any time of the day. Unlike Church’s, however, HiFive24 also offers up baked chicken in addition to fried chicken.

Church’s Chicken (South Burnaby): Crinkle Cut Fries and Gravy

Despite liking Church’s Chicken over places like KFC, it’s been quite a while since I hit up a Church’s. This fried chicken chain from Texas has a long history in the Lower Mainland (their first non-USA location was here).

Hi Five 24 – Baked and Fried Chicken

If you’re looking for comfort food, you don’t have to go much further than fried chicken. In the whole debate over who has the best fast food fried chicken in town… for my money, it’s always been Church’s > KFC. Of course, LA Chicken beats all of them but I put LA Chicken in a whole other class by themselves.

CoCo Ichibanyan (Umeda Station): Osaka 2017

I remember having curry on occasion while I was growing up… however, back then, Chinese curry just didn’t do it for me. You know what I’m talking about – that relatively bland yellow curry with the large potato chunks and little if anything else. If you thought that Japanese curry is anything like Chinese curry, you’re in for a big surprise.

Heaven Sent Fried Chicken (Everett): Ezell’s Famous Chicken

If you’ve ever head of Ezell’s Famous Chicken (and you probably have if you watch Oprah because she once stated it was her favourite fried chicken), then you’ll know that it’s a popular chain in the Seattle area. As it turns out Ezell had a falling out with the company that he co-founded and has since changed the name of his remaining locations to Heaven Sent Fried Chicken. Wow… talk about drama!

Piggy Smalls (Hawaii 2017): Laotian Fried Chicken and Long Toast

Back in 2016, we found a fun restaurant in Chinatown called The Pig and the Lady which served up some seriously tasty Vietnamese dishes. So when we were planning our trip this year, we wanted to stop by their newest sister restaurant called Piggy Smalls.

Juke Fried Chicken: Superbly Crunchy Coating

After hearing about the new fried chicken joint that opened up in Chinatown, we made sure to check it out after a recent visit to nearby Phnom Penh… because, after all, what better way to top off Phnom Penh chicken wings than with more fried chicken.

Le Bistro Montage (Portland Road Trip 2016)

Our 6 hour drive down from Vancouver, BC to Portland turned into a 9 hour trip due to a major accident on the I5 as well as numerous traffic snarl-ups. Since we wanted to get some shopping done, we decided to stop off for some dinner first. We were originally going to try Screen Door but it was so busy that we wound up at Le Bistro Montage instead.
