Mochi Lab (Hawaii 2018): Butter Mochi Cupcakes

It’s hard to believe that I first stumbled across Mochi Lab’s amazing butter mochi cupcakes in 2015 while walking through a farmers’ market in Waikiki. While we’ve been back to Hawaii a couple times since then, we’ve never been able to revisit until this past year. That’s partly because Mochi Lab can only be found at pop up locations. We made a special trip out to the Honolulu Farmers’ Market, in front of the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Ward Avenue, to revisit this year and were not disappointed.

Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp (Hawaii 2018): Butter Garlic Shrimp and Dole Whip

Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp is another one of the popular garlic shrimp stops along the windward coast of Oahu’s North Shore. It seems to be a popular stop for tour groups and we were lucky to arrive just before a large group of hungry tourists showed up.

Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck (Hawaii 2018): Seriously Famous Garlic Squid and Shrimp

Next on our road trip to the North Shore was a visit to Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck, which is super close to nearby Giovanni’s Aloha Shrimp Truck. Like many of the garlic shrimp trucks on the North Shore, Famous has a covered picnic table area where you can sit and enjoy your food purchases.

Cinnamon’s Kailua (Hawaii 2018): Guava Chiffon Pancakes

During our Hawaiian vacation in May, we decided to rent a car for a couple of days and head up to the North Shore. On the first day of our road trip, we drove up to Kailua on the windward (eastern) side of Oahu and it was pouring rain so we decided to stop for breakfast at Cinnamon’s before heading to the Valley of the Temples.

Eating House 1849 (Hawaii 2018): Crab Cakes and Paella

One of the many new restaurants that opened up in the new International Marketplace in Waikiki is Eating House 1849. Hawaiian inspired and styled after the original Eating House in the mid-1800’s, this Roy Yamaguchi restaurant looks to compliment the simple flavours of a plantation town with modern twists.

Da Ono Hawaiian Foods (Hawaii 2018): Traditional Hawaiian Eats

If you’re looking for more traditional Hawaiian dishes in Waikiki, you’ll probably want to head over to one of the many small hole-in-the-wall places which serves up meaty and filling meals fit for a king. One such famous place in Waikiki was Ono Hawaiian Foods which we had the chance to visit back in 2015. Since our last visit, it seemed like the old kitschy Ono Hawaiian Foods had closed down but has been reinvented into the new Da Ono Hawaiian Foods.

Coco Cove (Hawaii 2018): It’s Always Time for Poke

Coco Cove is one of the many grocery stores that dot the Waikiki area. Inside, you can find everything from hot prepared foods to frozen ice cream mochi. But the reason why we came here (3 times during our last trip to Waikiki) was because they also have a large selection of poke available within walking distance to our hotel and the beach.

Ono Seafood (Hawaii 2018): Ahi Poke

No trip to Honolulu would be complete without a healthy dose of poke. One of the best places to find fresh quality poke is Ono Seafood. Ever since our first visit to this hole-in-the-wall poke shop, we make a point to coming back whenever we’re in Waikiki.

Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood (Hawaii 2018): Best Garlic Shrimp

As I mentioned on my last post on Da Spot Health Foods and Juices Food Truck, we were pleasantly surprised to find not one but two shrimp trucks in the heart of Waikiki. Despite having plans to head over to the North Shore, it’s much more convenient to be able to pick up some tasty garlic shrimp when you can simply walk a couple of minutes to the shrimp trucks at Kuhio and Kanekapolei, next to the Food Pantry.
