Tropika (Aberdeen)

Is there actually any shopping to do in Aberdeen Centre that doesn’t involve food?  Well, on this one weekend, we came by to pick up some cables from NCIX and bumped into our nephew and his friends so we decided to try out Tropika (located on the lower floor near Mei Jan Hong). Penang Delight Cafe – Seafood Laksa

Not too long ago, we had our first visit to Penang Delight Cafe on Rupert Street.  The food was pretty good so when we found ourselves running errands in the neighbourhood recently, we wound up stopping by for another go.  One of the things that we enjoy about Penang Delight is the music that they play – not your usual top 40’s stuff.  It might seem a little odd to hear 70’s western music while enjoying some terrific Malaysian cuisine, but we liked it.

Tamarind Hill (New West) – Malaysian Food Near the Nexus of the Universe

After a long hike at Stanley Park, we came home hungry and tired.  Memories of the roti canai at Malay Curry House gave me a craving for some Malaysian food so we headed out to the small New West location of Tamarind Hill on 6th Avenue. Read the rest of this entry

Malay Curry House

As I mentioned in our post for Penang Delight Cafe, it’s not always easy to find a good Malaysian restaurant in South-East Vancouver.  I had read some good reviews about Malay Curry House on Kingsway so I was determined to try them out after work one day.  As luck would have it, I called for take-out on a Wednesday (apparently they’re closed on Tuesdays). Penang Delight Cafe – Tasty Malaysian Food in East Van

There’s really not a lot of different Malaysian restaurants on the East side of Vancouver  so when I heard about a new Malaysian restaurant opening on Rupert Street, I added it to my wishlist… and there it sat on my list for months.  It’s funny, I used to come to this block every week when I was younger to buy comics but I haven’t been back in years.

Curry King Cafe

I’ve often seen the bright neon sign for Curry King Cafe whenever I drive by Kingsway but have hesitated to go in because, quite frankly, I’ve never thought of Chinese restaurants as capable of producing tasty curry.  Fortunately, Curry King is more of a HK style cafe that draws influences from Malaysian and Thai cuisine. Mui Garden (Main Street)

Our original plan was to try Crave on Main but we didn’t realize how small the restaurant was and we didn’t feel like waiting in line for a table.  So we started hiking up Main Street looking for a place for a quick lunch and came across Mui Garden.  We recognized the name from the same restaurant on Victoria Drive and decided to pop in. Banana Leaf (Fairview) – Rasa Summer Platter

Summer barely started in Vancouver this year and now it’s almost over… what’s a person to do?  Get down to a restaurant and try out their special summer menus before they disappear for the season! Read the rest of this entry

JB Malaysian Cuisine

For some reason, there’s not many Malaysian restaurants in Burnaby… which is a shame because sometimes I get a craving for roti or spicy curry.  I’m not surprised that I haven’t seen JB Malaysian Cuisine on Kingsway before… I had the address and I still managed to drive by twice without seeing it nestled next to the HSBC. Tropika on Cambie

We haven’t been back to Tropika for years… which is kind of strange because we like Malaysian food.  I was wondering if it’s changed much since the last time we’ve been there so I read some reviews and I started remembering all of the little idiosyncrasies that Tropika was known for (ie. not seating your party of 6 or more if everyone wasn’t there, waiters trying to rush you through dinner, etc…).  I was actually pleasantly surprised this time around. Banana Leaf (Fairview)

We don’t make it down to Broadway too often but when we do, we always hear the beckoning of Banana Leaf.  There are a lot of great things on the menu but the best deal is to start off with the Appetizer Platter for 2:
