Hyack Sushi: All Hype or All That?

Anyone who has spent any time around New Westminster will probably be very familiar with the word “Hyack”. Originating from the Chinook jargon for quick, fast, or hurry up, the term has been adopted by various New Westminster area groups such as the 1861 volunteer fire department, the “Hyack Company #1”, the “Hyack Band” that performed during the May Day celebrations, and the popular annual “Hyack Festival”.

Zakkushi Dining on Main: Best Izakaya in Vancouver

After returning from our trip to Japan, I was starting to wonder if I would find an izakaya in Vancouver that I really enjoyed (not a big fan of Hapa Izakaya). I decided it was about time we visited Zakkushi as I had heard some pretty good things about them.

Sushi Modo: Solid Japanese Style Eats

Sushi Modo is a newish restaurant that’s popped up in the former Shokudo Restaurant location next to the Amorosa/Greek Santali House on Edmonds Street in Burnaby. The interior is fairly clean with not much changing from the last tenant.

Shunpu Banri: Tokyo 2017

Tokyo Dome City (also known as “Big Egg City” due to the dome-shaped roof of the stadium located in Bunkyo) is also home of LaQua, a shopping mall and amusement centre. Located on the 9th floor of LaQua is Shunpu Banri, a higher-end Japanese restaurant that is both spacious and tourist-friendly.

Kaikaya By The Sea: Tokyo 2017

One of our best meals during our last visit to Tokyo was at an izakaya (a restaurant that serves up Japanese tapas) located in Shibuya. We heard that this place was popular so we made an effort to show up early for their dinner seating. It’s about a 10 minute walk west of the Hachikō statue but it’s on a small little side street that we probably wouldn’t have even noticed.

One of the things that quickly becomes obvious when dining in Tokyo is that most restaurants are small and specialize in their own niche of foods. So if you’re in the mood for a little bit of this and a little bit of that… it becomes exponentially harder to find a place that will meet your needs.

Kuromon Sanpei (Kuromon Ichiba Market: Osaka 2017

One of the more popular spots in the Kuromon Ichiba Market is Kuromon Sanpei… known for their fatty tuna. This place is very popular so it’s a good idea to go there early. Again, like most places at the market, unless you read Japanese (or Chinese kanji), you might have difficulty finding this place.

Shizen Ya (Fairview): Organic Japanese Food

Shizen Ya is a unique chain of sushi restaurants (they have one location on Hornby and this location on West Broadway). This isn’t your run-of-the-mill sushi joint that pumps out cheap California rolls.

Edo Mirakuchaya Sora Machi Tei (Tokyo 2016): Sashimi and Rice Bowl

Tokyo Skytree is really a sight to behold… this building is the tallest structure in Japan at 634 metres and they have an observation deck that can see all the way to Mt. Fuji on a clear day. After taking in the magnificent views from the top of Skytree, we went looking for some lunch in one of the buildings attached to the Skytree complex.
