Shawarma Corner: Tasty Donairs

I’m always up for a good shawarma… whether you call it shawarma, gyro, or donair – there’s something about grilled meats on a spit that harkens back to a time when people used to bbq dino burgers on an open flame.

Abdul’s BBQ: Dry Shawarma (Déjà Vu)

Occasionally, I get asked how I got involved in writing a food blog. My answer is usually the same… I’m getting old. But more to the point, I like to try different places when I eat out and sometimes I can’t remember whether or not I’ve eaten somewhere before and whether or not the food was good (because I’m getting old). So it’s mildly ironic that I wound up at Abdul’s BBQ at Crystal Mall.

Taza Falafel House: Shawarma

Back in 2014, I visited a little hole-in-the-wall burger shop in New Westminster called Burger Burger. The burgers were pretty good but the shop closed up not too long after. Afterwards, I noticed that a middle eastern falafel place took over the location but I just haven’t found the time to visit until just recently.

Wild Thyme Lebanese Food – Hidden Gem in New West

I was driving down 12th Street in New Westminster in mid-July when I noticed that a new restaurant had taken up the old Big Star Sandwich location. House of Taste – Shawarmas in City Square

I used to always avoid the food court in City Square – it always seemed to be a little lacking.  However, on one of our latest trips out to City Square, we were getting a bit hungry and didn’t feel like going to Kirin so we decided to check out the food court and noticed a relatively new outlet serving up Shawarmas.

Donair Land – Donair or Shawarma?

Whether you call them “donairs” or “shawarma”, I like to call them tasty pockets of goodness.  Donair Land is conveniently located across from the Joyce Street Skytrain Station but slightly tucked away from the main intersection at Joyce and Vanness.  The last time I was here, I remember this being a busy little grocery store so I was surprised at how good the donairs tasted.
