Nahm Thai Bistro: Whalley Thai Food

We don’t wind up out in Surrey very often so I’m usually at a loss of where to go to grab some good grub. On a recent October weekend, we found ourselves out in the Whalley area and decided to try out Nahm Thai Bistro. As is usually the case with us, the Google Maps information told us that it should have been open but their actual opening time was a half hour later (darn you Google!). Since we didn’t know what else was around the neighbourhood, we just decided to wait until they opened.

Sapporo Kitchen (Surrey): Lunch Specials

Just on the outskirts of White Rock is a little shopping centre called Semiahmoo Shopping Centre. When we visited in early September, it looked like they were doing a bunch of renovations in the mall but we were really here to try out Sapporo Kitchen (a Japanese restaurant located outside the shopping centre).

Sabai Thai: Thai Eats in Guildford

I’m sure there are plenty of good restaurants in Surrey… I just don’t have the need or desire to spend much time in the area. Well, we found ourselves in a 2 hour lineup for a book signing near Guildford one Saturday and decided to get some food in the area afterwards. That’s how we ended up at Sabai Thai.

Full Ramen – Fleetwood Noodle Shop

Can you find good noodles outside of the downtown core? The answer is obviously “yes” but they tend to be few and far between.

Village Sushi (Cloverdale)

Village Sushi is a small little sushi joint located in the Hillcrest Village Shopping Centre in Cloverdale.

Umami Sushi – Cloverdale Crossing

I found myself out in the Cloverdale Crossing area back in October and decided to stop here for some lunch. If I knew that there were sushi places like Umami Sushi in Cloverdale, I’d spend more time out here.

Veneto’s Cakes and Pastries

Veneto’s Cakes & Pastries is a family owned bakery that specializes in European cakes, pastries, cookies and wedding cakes located in rootin’ tootin’ Newton. I was lucky enough to have some pastries given to me by a work associate and found the pastries to be quite nice.

Red Robin (Guildford Town Centre)

There used to be a time back in the 80’s when going out for gourmet burgers meant heading out to Red Robin. Many of the locations have closed over the years (probably due to the competition nowadays). We were starving and passing by the Guildford area so we stopped by for some grub. The decor in here looks exactly like how all of the other locations looked 25 years ago. Maybe it’s the sameness that some people like.

Gulberg Fine Cuisine – Pakistani Buffet

Gulberg Fine Cuisine is located in the Fleetwood area of Surrey and serves up Pakistani/Indian dishes. 

Taste of Punjab – Lamb Vindaloo and Butter Chicken

The Punjab region of South Asia is quite large and comprises both the Punjab province of Pakistan as well as the Punjab state of India.  The name takes itself from the Persian words “panj” meaning “five” and “aab” meaning water and refers to the five tributaries of the Indus River.  Okay, enough with the geography lesson, let’s get back to the reason why you’re here… namely food.

Akari Japanese Restaurant – Newton

Knowing how I suffer from problems with directions, I made sure to Google Akari beforehand when I knew that I was going to be out in the Newton area.  Unfortunately, I must have misread something that said Akari was located in the Strawberry Hill Shopping Centre.  I must have driven around that complex for a good five minutes before I pulled over and checked my phone only to find that it’s located across the street from Strawberry Hill in the Scott 72 Centre.

Cloverdale Bakery – Danish Pastries

If you’re out in Surrey near the Cloverdale Rodeo, you can find a quaint little historic neighbourhood along 176 Street.  Jump one block over onto 176A and you’ll find Cloverdale Bakery… specializing in Danish pastries for over 20 years.
