Hon’s Wun-Tun House (New West): Old School Asian Comfort Food
Things don’t get any more old school than Hon’s. There’s a good reason why they’ve been in business over 30 years… if you’re looking for Chinese comfort food, they have things nailed down pat.
Over the years, they’ve opened and closed various locations but the thing that they haven’t changed is how tasty their gyoza are. I had a hankering for gyoza for a while so I headed over to their New West location on 6th Street in mid-June and ordered their Lunch Set ($9.45) which includes an order of shrimp and pork wun tun as well as 6 pieces of your choice of pot stickers (I opted for pork).
You can customize your noodles and I went with the wide egg noodles. The wun tun noodle soup was pretty much what you expect… nothing out of the ordinary here.
What I did really enjoy here were the pot stickers. They had the perfect amount of charring on one side of the pot sticker which gave it a nice crispy edging. These are really classic.
Looking to skip the carbs one day, I decided to double-down on some BBQ items and ordered the BBQ Meat Platter ($12.95 for 2 types). I opted for the BBQ Pork and BBQ Duck. This dish is exactly as it sounds… just plain bbq meat (you can add rice on the side). To be honest, this was quite basic and not really on par with places that specialize in BBQ meats. The pork was on the tougher side but the duck was a bit better. Probably better off going to a local Chinese butchery instead.
If you’re looking for some old school Asian comfort food, Hon’s delivers.
