Mello: Keep Calm and Eat Donuts

“Mellow” – Adj. Pleasantly smooth or soft; free from harshness. I know the spelling is slightly different but if there was one word to describe the Strawberries and Cream brioche donut at this Chinatown donuterie… “Mello” would suffice.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts: Tried and True Kreme-Filled Doughnuts

Okay, I know that the time when Krispy Kreme ruled the doughnut landscape in the Lower Mainland has long since passed. But I still recall the huge lineups at their Delta location when they first opened.

Dipped Doughnuts: Vegan Doughnuts by Delivery

A few months ago, I started seeing a lot of posts about vegan doughnuts. Now, I’m not in the least bit vegan but these doughnuts looked real good. Turns out that Dipped Doughnuts is the purveyor of said 100% vegan doughnuts but, to my dismay, they had no storefront for me to drop by and pick up some (they currently work out of a commissary kitchen and offer their wares in select cafes).

Duffin’s Donuts: Old School Donuts in Vancouver 24/7

Does anything say old school donuts in Vancouver more than Duffin’s Donuts? Sure, you can find lot of cool designer donuts nowadays and they’re all pretty good. But when you’ve got a craving for some doughy goodness in the middle of the night, where else are you going to look other than Duffin’s considering that they’re open 24/7?

Kamehameha Bakery (Hawaii 2018): Poi Haupia Donut

We first came across the legendary Poi Glazed Donut from Kamehameha Bakery in 2017. Located in the same industrial-looking mini mall as Young’s Fish Market, it wasn’t rocket science that we would come back here again. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived (just after noon), they were already sold out of their poi glazed donuts! 😦

Modo Hawaii (Hawaii 2018): Mochi Donuts!

Our first experience with mochi donuts was with a Mister Donut in Akihabara in Japan where we got to try their famous Pon De Ring. For those of you unfamiliar, mochi donuts are dangerously addictive given how easy it is to polish them off. So when I saw that they opened up Modo Hawaii inside the International Marketplace, I knew that we would stop by here during our next visit to Waikiki.

Mister Donut (Akihabara): Tokyo 2017

When you’re this good… they call you “MISTER”. Seriously… I don’t know what else you can say about Mister Donut. Interestingly, Mister Donut originated in the US but is now headquartered in Japan. That probably explains why their mochi donut is soooo good.

Krispy Kreme (Abeno Q’s Mall): Osaka 2017

If you go back just over 11 years ago, there were no Krispy Kreme doughnut shops in Japan. Now, there’s over 40. I suppose they’ve really embraced the whole western fatty food culture. Not that I’m complaining at all.

Top Pot Doughnuts (Queen Anne): Hand-Forged Doughnuts

I love the story about how the name “Top Pot” Doughnuts came about. It seems that, prior to opening Top Pot, the co-founders had noticed a dilapidated neon sign above a boarded-up Chinese restaurant called “TOPSPOT”. They purchased it and left it in their backyard for four years before they decided to have it restored. Once they did, however, the middle “S” fell off, leaving the words “TOP POT” instead.

Kamehameha Bakery (Hawaii 2017): Poi Glazed Donut

On our visit to Oahu this year, we decided that we’d rent a car and head out to some of the places on the windward side of the island. Since we were heading out early, we figured the best thing to do would be to grab a quick snack from Kamehameha Bakery in the Kalihi area of Honolulu.
