Ishtar Donair: New West Shawarma Joint
Ishtar Donair is a relatively newish restaurant that opened up in the former Taza Falafel House location on 6th Street in New Westminster. They serve up the same type of food so there’s not much of a change to the interior… expect to find mainly donairs and shawarmas here.
On my first visit, I ordered the Chicken Shawarma Platter ($10.70) which is served on rice, with tabbouleh, pickled veggies, and some pretty tasty chicken that’s sliced off the rotating spit.
On my next visit, I tried their Lamb Donair ($7.20) which is stuffed inside a pita pocket along with the veggies of your choosing (ie. cucumbers, tabbouleh, red onions, pickles, tahini and hot sauce. It’s a fairly good sized portion and, overall, not bad in terms of the lamb. The Chicken Shawarma Wrap is quite similar with a good amount of charred chicken from the spit while the Beef Donair is also very similar to the lamb and chicken versions.
Since I’m on a roll with the wraps, I also tried the Falafel Wrap ($6.50) whichis fried-up to order so it takes a few more minutes to make. The falafel had a nice crispness to the exterior and I actually really enjoyed this meat-less wrap.
Overall, very solid offering to satisfy your donair, falafel, or shawarma craving. The guy working there was also very friendly on all of my visits.
